Scouts AGM Report 2013

This year has been a good one for the Scout Section. Numbers have once again remained fairly consistent and we are pleased that the members we have attend regularly and are committed to extra events. The Section has also been fortunate to welcome two new leaders to the leadership team, who have settled in very quickly and are a great asset to the Section. We have had a few members moving on to bigger and better things at Explorers and therefore have promoted new PL’s and APL’s who are relishing their extra responsibility. The section has welcomed many new Scouts from Cubs as well as outside the group and with our re-structured Patrols the Section is looking as strong as ever.

Throughout the year we have been involved in a lot of interesting activities, such as climbing, walking, pioneering, laser tag and of course lots of camping too. The Scouts have represented 6th Beeston in the district at events including winning the district quiz for the second year in a row! We also took part in the annual St. George’s Day and Remembrance Sunday parades.

This year the Scout Section has had a renewed focus on the community at large by attending community events such as litter picks and learning about different cultures from around the world through JOTI, the annual event held every year in October. This year’s JOTI was an outstanding success, we even had Scouts from around the district take part.

While we had no summer camp this year we have had other great opportunities, including the sub-zero winter camp in December and the equally frosty adventure challenge camp in at Easter! I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Scouts who took part in the NESST Challenge Hike as they all did very well and raised some much needed funds for this year’s summer camp. Expect even bigger and better things next year!

Overall the Scout Section has had a busy year and has achieved a lot and had a lot of fun along the way. The Scout Section is now looking forward to another exciting year of Scouting at 6th Beeston, especially our summer camp at Poacher 2013!

Family Camp 2010

The Group held its first family camp at Sherbrooke Campsite on the weekend of 19th & 20th June.

Nearly 90 people attended and we were lucky to have some great weather, although the nights were a little chilly for some.

There were plenty of activities to keep both young and old busy, including climbing, tunnelling, crate-stacking, zip-lining, archery and crafts, but the surprise hit of the weekend was the bottle rockets, with constantly refined designs resulting in some very impressive launches.

The talent competition also proved very popular and was won with a terrific unaccompanied rendition of Super Trooper. The theme of the camp was space and there were some great fancy dress costumes that reflected this.

A big THANK YOU to everyone that helped with the running of the camp, but particularly to AGSL Phil for organising it and Sarah for doing such a great job of the catering.

Patrol Leaders’ Training Camp

HPIM0406

The PLs and APLs spent a weekend honing their skills at Sherbrooke camp site, completing a variety of different tasks from building a trebuchet to cooking a main meal of sausage casserole and steamed pudding from scratch all on one fire by themselves!

Saturday was practical work whilst Sunday was more theory and “classroom” based. learning about what motivates people, working as a team, what a leader is and how to have a vision of what they wish to achieve for their patrols and how to make it a reality.

The “classroom session” finished with the PL’s and APL’s having to teach everyone a non Scouting skill from making a paper water-bomb, martial arts moves and head scarves!

All in all a very productive weekend and enjoyable weekend.
